Durante mi investigación sobre ascendencia africana, mi familia me revelaron que tengo ancestros del Congo y Sierra Leona.
Hice esta performance por vez primera en Bélgica para abordar la relación histórica de esclavitud de este país y RDC. Lo hice por segunda vez en Senegal, donde muchos de mis ancestros fueron separados, divididos, esclavizados y enviados en contra de su voluntad a través de 'la puerta de no retorno' al Continente de América.
La razón por la hago las figuras con mis pies es porque a muchas personas en el Congo les mutilaron las manos como castigo durante el período de colonización de Bélgica al Congo. Esta performance es un llamado a Bélgica y otras antiguos colonos para que revisen su Historia de forma transparente y responsable. Las figuras no son aleatorias sino referentes directos de las acciones contra los africanos durante el período de la esclavitud.
During my research on African ancestry, my family revealed to me that I have ancestors from Congo and Sierra Leone.
I had done this performance for the first time in Belgium to address the historical slavery relation of this country and RDC. I did it for a second time in Senegal, where many of my ancestors where separated, split, enslaved and sent against their own will through 'the door of no return' to the Continent of America.
The reason why I create all the figures with my feet is because many people in Congo had their hands mutilated as punishment during the period of colonization of Belgium to Congo. This performance is a call for Belgium, and other former colonies, to revisit their History and make serious research to what had happened in the past. The figures are not fortuitous but direct referents to the actions against Africans during the slavery time.
